The operas were stunning - both Carmen and Rigoletto were of such a high standard with wonderful singing and such imaginative attention to detail in bringing the drama off the page - such a privilege to have the chance to see and hear this quality.
The hotels were excellent, particularly the NH Collection. The staff there were so pleasant and it was good to have a drink, including tea/coffee, available in comfy surroundings after the performances. Not everyone stayed up for this but John and I always appreciate an unwind at the end of the day. The rooms themselves were really lovely - couldn't have wished for anything nicer!
I'm usually apprehensive about staying in a room at great height, but felt quite reassured in the Scandi, which was very comfortable. Breakfasts in both hotels offered amazing choices.
Hearing the Danish National Symphony Orchestra's superb playing, plus the gorgeous singing in the Bartók, was another great plus on this trip, though we would have gone for one of Sibelius' more exciting symphonies if we'd had the choice!
It was really interesting to hear from the tour guides, both of whom demonstrated such pride in their respective cities, and we feel we have much more understanding now of their connected histories. Neither of us knew much Danish history beyond school history lessons and were pleased to learn so much more about their culture. The visit to Fredriksborg Castle was also an interesting experience - the chapel in particular was fascinating.
We also enjoyed the experience of crossing the bridge, about which we had heard so much, and having a chance to explore Malmö a little. It encouraged us to look up all sort of things that we hadn't thought of before, and we spent a long time in St. Peter's Church during our free morning.
We enjoyed some superb meals during our stay. We're fortunate that neither of us has allergies but we did note a problem for some, as the meals had been so beautifully planned for us with great pride, by the host restaurants. Our memory of our Munich visit was that we had menus from which we could choose individually.
All in all, it was a wonderful and enriching visit - thank you for all the arrangements, including the very smooth BA flights.
